My Son on the Drums!

May 22, 2008

Kota was in the talent show at school this morning. The whole show was awesome! All kids from 1st to 5th grade performed. And here’s ours drumming his heart out to RelientK

EDITED TO ADD:

Brent just went to the school to p/u Kota and his drums and the Principal asked if the drums could stay cause he’d like Kota to play Tuesday night for the Board Meeting.

How cool!

You should be soooo proud! He’s awesome already

  3. May 22, 2008 2:21 pm

    Thanks!

Well, it wasn’t a contest – it was just a “show”.

We are very proud of Kota. He practices a lot. He loves it! He plays on the Kids Worship team along with his sister too.

He is self taught and started playing when we was 4. We knew he had something then. God truly gave him the ability to do this – to understand it. It is amazing!

    YOUR boy is truly amazing!

It is sinful when we are boastful or proud of our own works and do not give Him any credit.

There is no harm in sharing God-Given Talent with the world, nor revelling in Joy because of it.

And that is not to diminish your dedication and efforts ‘Kota.

You did Him proud today šŸ™‚

Your Mom and Dad and Sis know it – and now so do we! šŸ™‚

Love – Yes, it makes up for it. The cool thing is – I get to listen to him jam every day! It is one of the best things ever. Especially when Kass goes into his room and plugs her acoustic into the amp and they just play together and write. Blows. My. Mind!

Yes, I am proud of them. And so incredibly in awe of how creative God is!

    Heidi – That’s quite a mucho grande espaniel lesson-o. um-o. wow-o šŸ˜Æ

Tam-Because Kota rocks like The Who.

  46. May 22, 2008 10:55 pm

Tam, I noticed a Giant Idiot walked in right after you said “I love you el big o.”

  47. May 22, 2008 11:01 pm

Giant Idiot is feeling punchy after sitting through the new Indiana Jones movie.

  48. May 22, 2008 11:02 pm

Feeling “punchy.” That’s what Rocky says.

  49. May 22, 2008 11:05 pm

Punchy has to many syllables for Rocky

  50. May 22, 2008 11:06 pm

    Yo. Word.

  51. May 23, 2008 2:36 am

Tam – you would need ‘espaniel’ lessons to speak with Brandy’s cockapoopoo! šŸ˜Æ (Sorry Mandy!) šŸ˜‰

I think you mean espanol with a doovee (`) thing over the ‘o’??

And i know how not competititive you can be in love but didn’t you mean ‘i love you very much’ when you said ‘i love you very big’?

    Te amo mucho mucho?

    Te amo grosso grande??

For one South of the Equator my South of the Border sucks šŸ™‚

Any way you say it – i feel it too.

I forgot to mention that him, his sister Kass, and a couple other guys (leaders in kids ministry) have started a band. their plan is to be the open act for concerts in our Valley. I think they could do quite well at that. I’ll keep you posted!

  56. May 23, 2008 1:10 pm

  57. May 23, 2008 3:03 pm

Better than most drummers that I ever played with. Gonna be fun jammin’ with ya’ll šŸ˜Ž

  58. May 23, 2008 11:13 pm

    Hi Tam,

I’ve been a drummer for 30 years. That was suhweet. You guys have a lot to be proud of there. Plus “Kota” is already a great rock-n-roll name, so it all makes sense.

Kota, you are way ahead of where I was at your age… way ahead.

Here’s some advice you didn’t ask for: Make sure you keep playing along with recordings of bands (CD’s, mp3’s, etc) for timing and learning new grooves – (all kinds of music too, not just what you’re comfortable with)

And I know you don’t want to hear this, but wear ear plugs! When you’re 43 like me, you’ll still have your hearing and be glad you did. Lastly, when you have time, start learning the piano and guitar (6 string and bass); that way you will be able to intelligently speak with other musicians, and it will make you a better drummer too.

Live it. Breathe it. Let God develop you into the musician He wants you to become.

    MOST OF ALL… HAVE FUN!!!!

  59. May 24, 2008 3:49 am

That ROCKED!!! That was so awesome it made the hair on my arms stand up! Man! That kid’s GOT IT!! I love how everyone thought he was done, and then he just slammed right back into it! I think when I need a “pick me up” I’m just gonna come over here and listen to Kota play drums šŸ™‚ Awesome job Kota!!!

  60. May 24, 2008 4:01 am

Cathi..I would so wear that t shirt! Especially since I have a Kota too! LOL!

Tam….it’s not all God and Kota, go ahead say thank you! YOU could have said NO! And we all know, what mama says goes!! You made room for him to grow in the gifts God has placed inside of him. Bravo to you!! That’s a lesson to all of us….parents or not…to make room for the gifts of the younger generation…no matter what they look like and whether or not they appeal to our taste. They might just surprise us someday;)
And for the record….Kota is WAY more awesome than the Who. They couldn’t handle him:)

  61. May 24, 2008 7:07 pm

WOW!!!!!!!! I am a drummer and I am in awe. You are 11 and play like that. Get that boy filled with the Holy Spirit and he will kill on a worship team! Keep it up!

  62. May 24, 2008 8:38 pm

    stegall – cassette??? uuuhhhhh šŸ˜Æ

P365 – I can not wait for you all to jam together! It’s gonna be a blast!

Mark – Thank you again for your help, encouragement and wisdom! Invaluable!!! And nice to meet you as well šŸ˜‰

Kelly – Thank you! I see what you’re saying and I appreciate that very much! The whole thing just blows my mind! I really think God has big things in store for Kota, and his sister, in music…

Kevin – Thank you. And that is exactly it – if he ain’t filled and focused on the why and Who for then it is all just noise. Thanks for the encouragement! And thanks for stopping by too šŸ™‚

  63. May 25, 2008 3:33 pm

i just now finally got to watch this.

your son is incredible. you can tell him i say so! šŸ™‚

  64. May 25, 2008 3:58 pm

    yes ma’am. I will!

I just read your comment over at B’s place. Kota was suppose to bow. He’s concerned that people may think he was trying to act cool by just slipping out like that. But he was SO nervous he forgot to bow and walked off the wrong side. He just wanted to get off that stage!

I think it’s pretty funny now!
