use your ear spelling, k?

December 12, 2008

when i worked in the elementary school here in town i must have said “use your ear spelling” a hundred times a day to those lil kiddos. often times one of my 1st or 2nd graders would want to know how to spell a word that was far beyond their grade level, so i had them sound it out and spell it as they heard it.

for instance, let’s take the word traction and “ear spell” it. it might end up…trakshin.

so, i’d like to spend this friday ear spelling as much as we can here at inProgress. but just so you know, this is my attempt at making Love loopy. you see, my friend Love, from down undah, is a grammar freak and catches airvree. seengull. litull. miztake. won’t this be a big warm fuzzy for him?! it may just send him back into the crazy house.

and one more thing…talk amongst yourselves. talk about anything you want. tell us your favorite Christmas memory. favorite color. favorite song. most embarrassing moment. your dream vacation. why you don’t like miracle whip. where you wanta be in 5 years. anything at all. have fun!

The rset can be a toatl mses and you can sitll raed it wouthit porbelm. Tihs is bcuseae the huamn mnid deos not raed ervey lteter by istlef, but the wrod as a wlohe.

@brandy: seriously, right? It’s like trying to sing off-key on purpose… I correct it on instinct. I guess all those years of being an English major have ruined me for ear-spelling. πŸ™‚

Let’s have a rule orderly spelling. The spelling so-called system that we have at the moment reflects how the language was pronounced centuries ago & is more a bunch of contradictory conventions. This is serious as the illiteracy levels in the English speaking world are astronomical.

    Happy winter festival everyone!
