thursday swap…songs
if you were around for yesterdays post you probably noticed there are some very strong opinions about “christian” music. the post originally began with my frustration over milky lyrics. cliche lines. the same warm fuzzy phrases repackaged and set to knew melodies. im over it.
then the conversation evolved into several different soapboxes. all great concerns and issues that i think need to be talked about a lot more.
i dont really want to go into all of it again but i do encourage you to read through the comments if you werent a part of it already.
ok then..today is thursday swap but im switching it up…just a bit. there will be a swap still, of sorts.
id like for you all to share with us what your current favorite song is. tell us why. what is it about the music, the lyrics, the feeling it inspires in you, the dynamics? anything you can think of. so leave a link but remember if you have more than one link you’ll need to leave them in separate comments, otherwise the spam monster will eat it 😕
im looking forward to hearing what all my friends like!
Lightning Crashes by Live.
It just seems like life at its most raw. The music, the lyrics…the simplicity and the build up…
I’ve always liked the bittersweet nature of this song…
I love that song.
Grits- My Life be like –Oh Ahh
Not sure how to embed the video in the comment…
Here is the first verse of the song…
I’m on an island by my lonesome stranded
Low key and stayin candid
Reflectin on the things I try my hand at
Search for the equations to persuasions I’m used to
Findin comfort in the zones of closet bones I get loose to
A mountainous fontaine,
Spinnin and monsoonin
Grinnin its high octane
This worlds out wacky
Rollin down the hills cause lifes a hassle
Encircled by my folly like a moat surround a castle
Stay afloat,
Catch a second wind thin is the air I breathe
Teary-eyed nose runnin, wipe the snot on my sleeve
I’m callin on my savior to be all that I need
Please forgive me my behavior had me lost at light speed
Guess it embeds itself.. cool!!!
in high school, my brilliant english teacher had us analzing poetry all the time. one day, he brought several rap songs in, and showed us the incredible span of allusions, alliterations, puns, imagery, seriously impressive symbolism and other poetic mumbo-jumbo.
ever since, i’ve been so intrigued by this style of music. there are several rappers who are TRUE artists.
At this season in my life I’m drawn to some classic jars of clay:
Worlds Apart
Good stuff.
i love that song!
I could listen to this song all day long by PILOT SPEED.
What about you, Tam?
Lost Dogs at Cornerstone Festival last year:
The song is called “That’s Where Jesus Is”
This one’s for ckroboth, the closet rap fan (even though Toby mac is really singing in the style of Hip Hop…):
sooooooooo not what I was expecting.
What I love most about this one is that while it’s not your typical worship song, to this guy singing it, it’s HIS worship song. You can feel it in his lyrics, in his voice, see it in his face, he is totally in a worship frame of mind while singing this. Awesome.
For ckroboth II:
Thanks BAD… The first is awesome… Second Cool…
Toby had much more Rap on Momentum than he has on Portable Sounds.
Enjoy!
girl, I LOVE this song! Love rockin out to it in the truck, and even the boys know this one! NICE!
I really enjoy Brandon Heath – he seems to really speak from the heart, sometimes from MY heart!
Times by Tenth Avenue North.
There are times in our faith that we feel the weight of, well, just everything. Even the ‘relationship’ that all us good ‘baptists’ talk about being more important than religion feels strained.
The song starts with these lyrics:
I know I need you
I need to love you
I love to see you, and its been so long
I long to feel you
I feel this need for you
and I need to hear you
is that so wrong?
It reminds me of David’s Psalms that call out to God… those time when he felt in agony from the separation from God.
Then the song comes to these lyrics as if they are spoken by Christ concerning His love for us:
its underneath, its inside, its in between
the times you doubt me, when you can’t feel
the times that you’ve questioned ‘is this for real?’
the times you’ve broken, the times that you mend
the times you hate me and the times that you bend
well my love is over, its underneath
its inside, its in between,
these times you’re healing
and when your heart breaks
the times that you feel like you’ve fallen from grace
the times you’re hurting
the times that you heal
the times you go hungry and are tempted to steal
in times of confusion and chaos and pain
I’m there in your sorrow under the weight of your shame
I’m there through your heartache
I’m there in the storm
my love I will keep you by my power alone
I don’t care where you’ve fallen, where you have been
I’ll never forsake you
my love never ends, it never ends
The melody and music of the song is soft and seems almost a lullaby.
im about to take my kids to school but i cant wait to come back and watch all these videos.
thank you!
Someone mentioned Derek Webb. He’s got a bunch of great, great “make you think & repent” songs. Here’s one of my favorites called “Wedding Dress” [PG-13 Warning]:
i LOVE this song. its bold. its perfect. imo!
thank you for posting this vid!
and you really need to post those other ones you emailed to me. thats what this thread is for 🙂 post all you want. im hoping the string of vids and recommendations can become an archive for us to draw upon. so really, keep’em coming, friend!
LOVE him. and LOVE the song. seriously. for awhile, it sat on repeat in my itunes. couldn’t get enough of it.
I may have mentioned this song on my own blog, and oh, several million times elsewhere, but I cannot get it out of my head. I love, love, LOVE it. You know when you hear a song and it makes you feel really happy? This is mine of the moment. And *shockingly* it’s not a CCM track!
Elbow – One Day Like This
I’m a big fan of Elbow Diane…I haven’t come across many others familiar with them!
British music in general is far bigger in Oz than it ever gets in the US, Nate…I’d venture to say that most of the non-Oz music we have in our collection is British rather than American
Of course, Diane being from Northern Ireland helps keep those home fires burning in our house too.
Wow, his voice is beautiful!
That is some beautiful sound there. Thanks for sharing, Diane!
Yeah, I love Guy Garvey’s voice, it’s somewhat unexpected! Just such a warm-sounding tone (or something, I’m not the greatest person to comment on vocal technique, I leave that to David!) 🙂
I’d recommend checking them out – they have a lot of stuff on Youtube as well. And if you like Elobw, you may like Doves as well.
That’s my plug over.
his voice reminds me of Gerard Butler in The Phantom Of The Opera. Listening to some of their stuff on youtube right now. 😉 The Bones Of You right now.
thank God for real strings.
if i hear one more song with synthesized strings, i’ll….i’ll….
change the channel… 😯 ha.
Wow! Only one? That’s tough! But, I’d have to say at the moment it’s this little ditty by Jimmy Needham that speaks most deeply to me and touches on the heart of things I have been struggling with of late:
DUDE, you rock. Totally my current favorite!
“there is no condemnation in you….”
hmmm, me thinks we have similar musical favorites. 😉 What do you think of Red, Skillet, Pillar, and such?
watching this again, and the lyrics are SO POWERFUL. Accompanied with music or not, this chills.
LOVE ’em! Also dig Thousand Foot Krutch, P.O.D., Decyfer Down, Disciple, Fireflight, Family Force 5, Kutless, Seventh Day Slumber, etc., etc. My wife doesn’t care for any of that – says it still sounds evil even with positive lyrics – so I tend to crank it when she’s not around. I told ya – I likes my worship with an edge!
I can also do mellow CCM when I’m in the mood. My Itunes is a pretty eclectic mix of Christian music – everything from pop to rock, alternative to indie, jazz to gospel, rap to hip-hop – there’s even a little Stryper and Petra in the mix!
I’d love to spend a day with your iTunes! LOL!
i SHOUT this song in my car!!!!
Right now … anything prophetic worship. Really wanting Kim Walker’s CD (or DVD).
Anything from Bethel is great right now. My issue with most prophetic worship is that it sounds like……bad Enya. That’s why I’m so thrilled with Kim Walker et al – it’s SO good.
You all have such awesome music knowledge! I love that. Thanks for sharing your finds!!
Ummm, this was a pretty awesome take on Christian music/artists:
I know, I’m coming back to a thread that is DAYS old 😆 but I wanted to come back and see all these vids and check out more of them on youtube. So, that’s what I’m doing. 😉
and im so glad you have come back. id actually like to see this thread stay alive and active. in fact…i may just start a new page for everyone to come and drop links/vids to/of their favorite song at the moment. what do ya think? should i?
I was totally thinking last night that this should be it’s own page that we can referrence or add to. 😉 Great minds!
Tammy said to go ahead and add more videos, so here goes…
Brother Red Squirrel (JPUSA) –
Christian Blues from Glenn Kaiser Band:
This sister has soul…Maron:
“you can’t serve God and Man, don’t you understand? Get serious” LOVE that line.
I’m “debating” with a friend on Facebook right now about something that falls into that…. she is a christian and supports gay marriage. We are talking about how one view is GOD and another is MAN. Anyway, waaaaay off topic, but it made me think of that. 😉
Love this one!
Seriously people, WATCH this one!
The Godfather of Christian Rock (and one of the original CCM outcasts…)
Larry Norman – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uD7ZZHEOMJY
Worship music from India – Aradhna:
im lovin all these vids Bad!!! thank you!!! 🙂
seriously! I’m listening to them all now….great stuff. 😀
(I messed up the Larry Norman post…)
The Godfather of Christian Rock (and one of the original CCM outcasts…)
Larry Norman –
My all-time favorite Christian Rock artist, Mylon LeFevre & Broken Heart. The first time I saw them in concert was May 1983 or 1984. They played for over 4 hours (of course, Mylon probably spoke himself for over an hour).
Bruce Cockburn…
Somebody mentioned Family Force 5…
this was awesome! and hilarious! 😆 hahaha!
one of our fams faves right here!
My favorite ‘secular’ Christian band – Extreme:
They got back together last summer and I finally got to see them in concert.
Amazing. I can die now.
One more song from Extreme. Listen carefully…it’s Romans 7 (still looking for Romans 9)
Phil Keaggy –
I really love this song! Hits me right in the face every time! “We are all guilty” fortunately there is forgiveness 😀 great thread!!
WOW! I like it! Never heard of them before…. love her voice.
Just found this Warren Barfield gem….pretty sure this is my new fave. Actually, this is a timeless one. The words just CHOKE me up, especially the line “may angels guard the door….” WOW!
I loves me some Jennifer Knapp too – not too many videos out there, but if you can pick up any of her albums you will not be disappointed.
She is probably my favorite femail voice in all of Christian music. 😀 Love everything she does!
seriously Brandy? FEMAIL?
I’ve GOT to stop speaking/typing on no sleep. It does me no good. LOL
FEMALE. duh.
Brothers John Michael and Terry Talbot were early “Jesus Movement” rockers – they had a band called Mason Proffitt. John Michael is a guitar virtuoso in his own right. His early works are very rock/southern rock, while his later works (since he became a monk) have become more classical.
This is one of my all-time favorite songs…
Keith Green. I was supposed to see him in concert but he did the nose dive with his plane a month before the date. I was so angry that he spoiled my chance to see him. I’ll get over it one of these days.
Anyone remember Kansas? Dust in the Wind? Carry On My Wayward [read: Prodigal] son? They started focusing more on Christian lyrics in 1982 which caused Steve Walsh to leave the band. Kerry Livgren eventually left and formed a band called A.D. Here’s my favorite song from this album: Chasing Shadows
Favorite worship song:
more Sunday morning worship music (Israel Houghton & New Breed):
My absolute FAVORITE “sunday morning worship” song. Ever. Hands down. 😀
saw him in concert in march! awesome!!
I’m so jealous! 😯
Salvador:
this one was WAY fun to watch! LOVED the dancing!
One more for now; I’ve got yardwork to do!
Petra:
FREEDOM by Jason Upton
The church I like here sang this one Sunday and I loved the lyrics…
the vid is kinda cheezey/cutesy (done by kids) but the lyrics are really clear on this video.
(make this a page!)
