remembering…

November 25, 2009

i love the holidays. i truly do. i love the smells, the music, the food, gifts, giving, fellowship, the laughter, family gatherings…all the things that make this season complete.

and with holidays come traditions. and you cant have tradition without remembering. remembering past traditions.

remembering the past.

for some, taking a walk down holiday memory lane is a much awaited joy. for others, it is not. sometimes, holidays are difficult. they can take one back to a place filled with uncertainty, fear and bad memories. i know for me it can. i know some who have lost loved ones on, or around, the holidays.

so this season…remember to pray for the ones whose hearts are heavy. whose eyes fill with tears at the thought of having to put a smile on as to not show the sadness.

if you all know me at all, you know i am not a kill joy. thats not what this post is about. i am all about joy and laughter. but its important to me that we remember the ones who struggle this time of year. remember to come alongside and love on them. invite them into your homes. give them encouragement, your prayers, some time. give them love. give them hope.

i love you all. and this year – i am so very grateful for you! im thankful for the friendships that have grown here. i love this community – this family. you all make inProgress home. thank you.

It’s always very evident around the holidays that we live 1500 miles from home. Knowing that now the responsibility to provide that atmosphere I always looked forward to when growing up is now on me is a bit overwhelming, but I enjoy that it’s “my turn” to pass that along. I don’t miss making 4-5 stops on each holiday though to appease both sides of our families! haha!

The thing I miss most though are the hugs on those days, even now it makes me cry a little to think about it, but I’m grateful I have those hugs to miss and know I’ll be able to collect when we go home next summer. 😉

I hope you feel better soon, so you can make the most out of Thanksgiving with your family.

I agree the holiday season gives us an opportunity to reach out to anyone we know who may be alone.

My mother, father and sister all died between Thanksgiving and New Years. My only family left is my nieces. The holidays motivated me to visit them.

I think there is a greater sense of family, and community. during these holidays, except of course for the crowds fighting over sales at the mall. 🙂

It’s tough!! Grandma passed away on Thanksgiving Day last year and I’m not sure the day will ever be the same.
Praying for all of you here in this community!
It is a bright spot on the most dreary of days.
    Thanks for that!

Happy Thanksgiving Tam…. Thank you for this post. There are some definite holes in the holidays this year. Mom is having the best one of her life… I’m sure Jesus puts on quite a spread 🙂 We decided to not try to hide anything… we’re just letting the tears flow when they flow, and believe somehow she is with us. It’s friends like you who make life bearable in spite of the trials and tests, for that I am very thankful today.

Happy Thanksgiving! I have not visited your blog in a while, I am listed as Spatulahandle on your sidebar. I had to change blogs this summer so my new link is http//:pumpkin1027.wordpress.com

My families gatherings seem to get smaller and smaller every year. This year it was only my mom, brother, my husband, three kids and I. My other brother had to work and it was really strange without him there. We used to have Thanksgiving at my grandmothers house. She had tables set up in her living room to seat forty people, those were the best thanksgivings. My cousins and I would go pick pecans up off the ground that fell from my grandmothers tree and bring them in so she could make pecan pies for Christmas. A few years ago, my grandmother passed away and the big family gatherings stopped. Everybody does their own thing now and they are still fun, but there is just nothing like the celebrations we used to have.

I hope that you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving.
    Melanie
